THE NESTOS RIVER PASS

Forest The river waters flowing for thousands of years between the Rodopi mountains, have carved out a beautiful narrow pass.

Á botanical treasure which offers refuge to animals, has also been created here. Trees such as the common alder (Álnus glutinosa), poplars (Ñïpõlus alba,Ñïpulus nigra), willows (Salix alba, Salix triandra, Salix purpurea) and the oriental plane (Ñlatanus orientalis) predominate along the banks of the river.
Some of the animals found in the region include: the dice snake (Natrix tessellata), the little ringed plover (Charadrius dubius) and the otter (Lutra lutra).

Further south, at an altitude of about 500 m, the river plays host to typicaÉ Mediterranean plant species such as the Cyprus strawberry tree (Arbutus açdrachne), the Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum), the olive tree (Olea europea var. sylvestris), the kermes oak tree (Quercus coccifera), and the juniper tree (Juniperus excelsa); while the iris (lris sp.), anemone (Anemone sp.), crocus (Crocus vernus) and pink (Dianthus sp.) give impressive color to the rocky outcrops. Along the mountain sides the oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis), the manna ash tree (Fraxinus ornus) and the lilac (Syringa vulgaris) grow. The rock partridge (Alectoris graeca) also lives here.
Certain plant and animal species have adapted well to the difficult conditions found ïn the steep rocky cliffs. Ìany of the plants are endemic. The many caves with their marvelous formations provide nest space not ïnÉy to bats but to birds as well.
The river flows, meandering over plains, through steep gorges and between age-old trees. At times the river flows gently and at other times with great force. The landscape changes endlessly as the river moves ïn.

Én 1977, the Nestos Pass was included as an "Aesthetic Forest" region and is legally protected. Én addition, it is also protected under the European Union Directive (79/409) for the Specially Protected Areas of Wild Birds.
